Congratulations to Edwina Guckian and all involved in the fantastic night’s entertainment in Lough Rynn Castle hotel on Friday night last. To Fionnuala Maxwell who is up there with the best of them as M.C. for the night and to the judges Eleanor Shanley, Alan Devine and John McCartin who had an unenviable task. Fair play to “Moone Boy” for also taking part with the Guards team. On a local note The Bingo buddies Geraldine Monaghan, Maura Bohan, Patricia O’Reilly, Ann Marie O’Reilly, Charles Brown, Bernie Daniels, Declan Gill, Amy Keane, Chloe Daniels and Orla McGowan were wonderful! All of them. Also to the Mammies who included Mrs Brown aka Gerry Gilroy in their act also Fionnuala and Liam Taylor Jnr, and Jack Hughes. The Mammies won the Chancers award. In my book they were all winners at the end of the night and well done to them for taking part in this fundraiser for the Connaught Fleadh in Carrick-on-Shannon. D.V.Ds of the night are now available and can be got from Edwina, 086 1649989.

Mick Hanly Concert

The long-awaited Mick Hanly Concert which took place in the Community Centre on Saturday night last was a wonderful treat of music, song and story. Earlier in the day Mick Hanly led a group of hardy walkers on the Trollope Trail together with Noel Duignan who also gave a brief history of the village and surrounds. The walkers were met at Ballycloran by Anthony Trollope and his wife Rose who were on a nostalgic trip back to where Trollope wrote his first novel. After a warm greeting the walkers finished the trail and were well rested in time for the concert. Mick enjoyed his visit and promised to come back again soon.

Carrick Historical Society

Local man Alf Monaghan is back by popular demand to talk on Monastic Ireland - A gift of the Nile - on Wednesday, March 20th in the Bush Hotel at 8.30pm. His illustrated presentation looks at the early History of Irish Christianity from a Mediterranean perspective. It provides a tantalizing glimpse under the veil of History. It asks many questions and confounds some of the accepted theories about the History of early Christianity. It traces links with ancient Egypt, connects Irish Monasticism with the Desert Fathers and the early Irish Church with the Egyptian Coptic Church. His talk will also look at the “back story” to these links, with expanded information on Eastern and North African influences which made Ireland the “Insula Sacra” of the ancients.
