Community Council revises electoral process

Ballinamore Area Community Council which has been a Company limited by Guarantee since 1993 has recently revised it’s Articles of Association to provide for a new electoral process.

The Community Council was established in 1975 for the purpose of representing the areas of Aughnasheelin, Aughawillan, Ballinamore, Corraleehan, Drumreilly and Fenagh in regard to various areas of activity. It is affiliated to Muintir na Tíre and has had from time to time involvement in numerous development bodies.

In 1993 it became necessary to establish it as a Limited Company in order to secure various development grants. Three construction projects have been undertaken since then and in the region of €1m in grant aid has been secured from various funders. The final project which will incorporate a small community hall and Scout Den adjacent the Sports Hall is nearing completion.

Under the revised Articles elections will be held in late May along the model of the Leitrim Development Company elections with organisations in each of the six parishes which are registered with the Leitrim Community Forum having a vote both in electing two representatives from their own parish and three from the overall area.

The elections will be held in Ballinamore in similar fashion to the LDC elections. The new members will take their seats at the AGM in July.

With construction projects completed and a growing threat both to local democracy and the rural way of life more and more manifesting itself as service after service is being withdrawn or under threat with decision making moved further and further away from local people the emphasis will now move more towards representation and lobbying.
