Drumkeerin in Tidy Towns

There was a good attendance at the meeting on Wednesday March 13th with sixteen present and apologizes from five who could not be present because of other engagements. Andrew Redican, Chairperson addressed the meeting before proceeding to the election of Officers. He welcomed all present and he said he was greatly heartened by the enthusiastic reponse to the Tidy Towns effort in 2012. He thanked all for their involvement and encouragement. The Tidy Towns was in a healthy financial position following the bag packing at Dunnes Stores, Sligo for which gratitude was expressed to Chris Torsney Manager of Dunnes who facilititated the bag packing day. He said that he was Chairperson of the Tidy Towns since 1993 and he felt that it was long overdue to have a new Chairperson.

However when it came to election of officers, the outgoing Chairperson was prevailed on to go another year with the assistance of a sub-committee to share the burden of direction operations. The sub committee elected was as follows: Mary Doran, Christopher Torsney, Gerry Gallagher and Fintan Redican.

Mary Bohan who had served for many years as Secretary said she would prefer to step down due to commitments. The Chairperson welcomed Bernie Archer as the new Secretary and thanked her for accepting the position. Rosaline Davitt was re-elected as Treasurer.

It was agreed that in the programme for 2-13 first efforts must be directed to dealing with the areas that were unfavourably commented on in the 2012 adjudication Report. The members present were delighted to learn that quite a few of the problem areas mentioned in the report had been dealt with by the workers on the RSS directed by the Supervisor, Seamus Shanley. The meeting also learned that the Tidy Towns Commitee was optimistic of getting trees to plant in areas suggested by the 5 Year Drumkeerin Tidy Towns Action Plan. The harsh weather over the last few weeks has delayed organising days for volunteers to get out and do soem work for 2013. Watch out for news of such days in the weeks ahead.

Francis Bobby McLoughlin

There was widespread regret and sadness with the death of Francis Bobby McLoughlin, Tullinafrave, Dowra. Bobby was a very popular and highly respected man in the community and surrounding communities. He was a most obliging neighbour. A hard working man, he and his loving wife Rose raised a large family of four girls and four boys in difficult economic times. He was a progressive farmer. A handyman, Bobby could turn his hand to many activities in the construction area. In the early years of rural electification, many houses in the area were wired by Bobby.

He was a great family man. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, his family always came first. When his wife Rose took ill fifteen years ago, Bobby looked after her with wonderful care. His death then is a very sad blow to Rose and family and extended family. We extend sympathy to Rose, to his sons Frankie, Charlie, Pat Anthony and Val, daughters Margie, Bridie, Bernadette and Rosaline, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, relatives and neighbours.
