Minor League Draw

It was the battle of the Gaels on Saturday last as Garadice Gaels and Melvin Gaels divided the spoils in what was an entertaining Minor League game on the dry sod of Kinlough, the fare made all the more entertaining because of the spring sunshine. Garadice were slow to settle. The Melvin-siders raced into a four points lead before Dylan opened his side’s account, pointing his own free in the 13th minute. Garadice continued to settle in, repeated the dose in the 25th minute and put Conor Gaffney through two minutes later for the visitors’ fourth point. In the meantime the home-side with another point retained the minimum lead. Two further points from Melvin Gaels gave them an interval lead of three points.

On the resumption Dylan Mimna successfully punished afoul on himself with the resultant free. The Garadice lads then drifted into arrears of seven points before they again pierced the opposition’s rearguard. In a purple patch Conor Gaffney from a free and play-2pts. and Mark Plunkett 2 pts. both from play and a “45” narrowed the deficit to two points. When Conor Gaffney’s low drive was parried, he followed up to rifle his second effort to the net. Melvin Gaels knocked over a point, and Mark Plunkett’s long free sailed high over the Melvin lath. A daring save by the home side’s goalkeeper denied Garadice full League points, Dylan Mimna’ late pointed free, to punish a foul on tireless Conor Gaffney, was sufficient to give Garadice a share of the League points. The final score was 1-12 to 0-15.

The Garadice Gaels lineout was as follows: Darragh McNiff, Rory McTague, Pierce Dolan, Donal McCabe, Ronan Maxwell, Killian Lavin, Mark Plunkett (0-5), Fergal McTague, Dylan Mimna, (0-3) Declan Flanagan, Adam Kearns, Conor Gaffney (1-4) and Michael Prior. Sub used: Kieran O’Haire.
