Playing For Sam
Fermanagh will welcome All-Ireland finalists Mayo to Brewster Park, Enniskillen on Saturday, May 4 at 6pm for a pre-Championship friendly meeting in aid of the Sam Bradley Care Fund. Sam is a 21 month toddler from Bellanaleck who is currently undergoing treatment for a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Sam is the grandson of John McHugh formerly of Moneenlum, Glenfarne who currently lives in Kiltimagh, Mayo.
Sam’s father, Colm is former Fermanagh inter county star and his mother Michelle is from Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo, so it is quite appropriate that Fermanagh and Mayo should play in the young toddler’s Care Fund game. The game is sure to be a top class inter county challenge outing for both counties in advance of their respective Ulster and Connacht championships engagements. Sam is currently undergoing treatment and will be recovering from eight-hour surgery to remove a tumour from his right kidney by time the game takes place at 6pm on Thursday, May 2 in Enniskillen.
Speaking to the Irish News regarding his son’s treatment, Colm Bradley explained: “The surgery is the second phase in a six-phase treatment plan before more chemo, radiation and then immunotherapy. “No matter what has happened, whether he’s getting an injection or whatever, five minutes later he’s smiling again. Even during the Dublin v Mayo game on Sunday, he was running around, kicking a ball and shouting and roaring at the TV.
“He’s incredibly strong - my wife says it must be the Mayo in him” the former Erne County player remarked. It is hoped that a large number of people from North Leitrim and indeed from all of Leitrim will travel to Enniskillen to support the Sam Bradley Care Fund game on Thursday evening week.
