Death of Francie Murphy, Carrigallen

There was widespread regret in the surrounding areas of Arva and the greater Carrigallen District on news of the death which occurred suddenly on Wednesday evening, March 27th, of Francie Murphy, Drumbreanlis, Carrigallen, County Leitrim. Deceased who was in his early 80s was a farmer all his life, having attended the nearby now closed Drumbreanlis Primary School. He began to help out on the farm with his parents while the other four family members emigrated. He liked to socialise and enjoyed a few drinks at weekends either in Arva or Carrigallen and could tell many a story of days long ago. In his spare time, he liked nothing better than to go out on his boat to fish the local Gulladoo Lakes and was an expert when it came to identifying certain fish in the lakes and rivers beside where he was born and reared. The farm and animals were his life as well. In recent years he was joined by his brother Jimmy who came home on retirement from England. He too helped out on the farm. He will be hugely missed by all his adjoining neighbours and friends who turned out in large numbers on Wednesday at his home where he was waked until being removed to St. Mary’s Church, Carrigallen where the remains were received by Rev Denis Murray, P.P., Carrigallen.

Then on Holy Thursday the funeral liturgy was at 11am as no Mass is said on that day. Afterwards he was brought back to nearby Errew Cemetery for burial where Fr. Murray led the funeral prayers. There was a large crowd present on both occasions. He is survived by one sister and two brothers, one which is Jimmy who resides in the family homestead, nephews, nieces and a large family circle. RIP.

Easter Ceremonies

There was a good turnout for the Easter Church Ceremonies in Ballinamuck, Legga, Moyne, Arva, Carrigallen and Aughavas. Despite the harsh weather, Carrigallen Church of Ireland had a dawn service on Easter Sunday.

Ploughing match attracts good crowd

There was a big crowd in attendance at the Ploughing Competition held in Carrigallen on Easter Saturday. The ground was dry for a change unlike the past three years. Young and old took part in various competitions and all enjoyed the day out but the day itself weather wise was very cold.
