The late Annie Burke

The death has taken place of Annie Burke (nee Kelly), Cloonfad, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Roscommon on Monday, March 11th, 2013, peacefully, in the loving care of the staff of St Patrick’s Hospital, Carrick-on-Shannon. Annie, who was in her 90th year, was predeceased by her husband John, daughter Teresa Earley and granddaughter Sandra Earley, Kilclare who both died suddenly last year. Annie is survived by her daughters Brigid and Margaret, son John, daughter-in-law, sons-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and a large circle of friends.

Annie’s remains reposed at St Patrick’s Hospital Chapel on Tuesday, March 12th with removal that evening to Dangan Church. Requiem Mass took place on Wednesday, March 13th with burial afterwards in Aughrim Cemetery. May she rest in peace.

Historical Society lecture

‘Monastic Ireland - A Gift from the Nile’ is the topic on Wednesday, 20th March, at 8.30 pm in the Bush Hotel, presented by Carrick native and world traveller Alf Monaghan. This well-received lecture with slides and discussion was presented in 2012 and has been expanded and reprised by popular demand. It focusses on Eastern and Mediterranean influences on the Early Irish Church as well as the Druidic system preceding it. The lecture is open to the public (€5/€3 concession) and is expected to have a large attendance, so please arrive early. Membership in the Historical Society is only €20 per year (€25 family) and includes free admission to all Society lectures. For further information, see

Anti Bullying Information Evening For Parents: Breffni Family Resource Centre in association with HSE are pleased to provide a FREE Anti-Bullying Workshop for Parents. Carrick-on-Shannon Fianna Fail

The A.G.M. of M.J. McManus Fianna Fail Cumann Carrick-on-Shannon was held in the Bush Hotel on Thursday, 14th March 2013.

The following officers were elected. President: John Morahan. Chairperson: Stephen King. Vice-Chairperson: Sean Duignan. Secretary: Siobhan Finnegan McElgunn. Joint Treasurers: Farrell McElgunn and Fintan Cox.

At this meeting Siobhan FInnegan McElgunn was nominated to go forward for selection as a candidate for the forthcoming Local Elections to be held in 2014. Selection Conventions will take place during Summer/Autumn 2013.
