The late Sean O’Dowd

The death has occurred of Sean O’Dowd, Kilcroy, Hillstreet, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Roscommon on Friday, April 12th, 2013, (peacefully) surrounded by all his family and the staff at the Galway Hospice: Sean is survived by his wife Kathleen (nee Cogan), Ballindoon, Sligo, children Adeline, Charles, Emer and Siobhan, mother-in-law Bridie Cogan and all the O’Dowd and Cogan families, his many relatives, friends and neighbours.

Remains reposed at the family home on Sunday, April 14th from 2 o’clock to 6 o’clock. Funeral Mass took place in the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help at 12 noon on Monday, April 15th followed by burial afterwards in Aughrim Cemetery. May he rest in peace.

The late Teresa McDermott

The death has taken place of Teresa McDermott (nee Rynn), Gloria, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon on Monday, April 8th 2013 (peacefully) at her home. Pre-deceased by her loving husband, Aloysius, son Martin, son-in-law Micheal and daughter-in-law Blondina, she is survived by her loving daughters Mary, Catherine and Ann, sons-in-law Seamus and Patrick, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces and extended family, neighbours and many friends.

Remains reposed at her home until 6.30pm on Wednesday, April 10th. Removal to St. Michael’s Church, Cootehall with Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, April 11th at 12.30pm. Interment took place afterwards in Ardcarne Cemetery. May she rest in peace.

The late Zolene Cronogue

The death has occurred of Zolene Cronogue, Cortober, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Roscommon who died on Tuesday, April 9th last. She is survived by her parents Geraldine and John, sister Tara and brother Shane. Remains reposed at Sharkey’s Funeral Home, Frenchpark on Friday, April 12th with removal to St. Mary’s Church, Carrick-on-Shannon that evening.

Requiem Mass was celebrated at 12 noon on Saturday, April 13th with burial afterwards in Kiltoghert new cemetery. May she rest in peace.

Tidy Towns news

Where are the “Poop Scoopers”? Walking around the parks recently I notice a foul smell. I seek to find out what is this? Does not take much to follow the smell, it’s rotten. Here and there little plastic bags containing your little beauty’ “poop”. Nobody should have to remove these little “gift bags”. Enjoy your walk with your dog and please “Scoop the Poop, and dispose of it properly”.

Cake Sale Fundraiser

St Mary’s Figure Dance team are holding a fundraising cake sale next Saturday and Sunday. The 8 ladies in the team have qualified for the All-Ireland Scor final in Derry on Saturday, 27th April. The cake sale is taking place after 7pm mass in Jamestown on Saturday evening, after 10am mass in Gowel on Sunday morning and after 12 noon mass in Carrick-on-Shannon, your support would be greatly appreciated, lots of nice goodies on offer.

Community Games

Under 10 Gaelic Football (Mixed) - Trials for the Carrick Area Community Games team will take place in the Leitrim Village Community Pitch on Wednesday, 17th April at 7pm. Players must be born between 1st August 2003 and 31st July 2005.

Historical Society lecture

Wednesday (tonight), 17th April, 8.30pm, Bush Hotel. John Feely presents ‘Carrigdrumruske - The First 300 Years’ a look at what was happening in Carrick-on-Shannon in the wider context of Irish and world events in the period 1613-1913, based on his own research and that done by local people for the soon to be launched historical booklet under the Twin Traditions Initiative. The lecture is open to the public at €5 admission (€3 concession).

St Vincent de Paul Ozanam House Shop

Our St Vincent de Paul Ozanam House Shop opening hours are now as follows: Mondays 11am-2pm, Tuesdays & Wednesdays 2pm-5pm, Thursdays 11am-5pm & 8pm-10 pm, Fridays 11am to 5pm. We are always looking for good secondhand clothes for our shop. Please only drop clothes into shop during shop opening hours. We are unable to accept furniture or electrical items. Please do not leave bags outside shop as 24 hour cameras are in operation.

Leitrim Birdwatch Walk

The Leitrim Branch of BirdWatch Ireland is going on a cuckoo-watching walk to Loughtown Lake, Effernagh, south Leitrim, on Sunday, April 21st at 10am. We meet at Garvey’s Garage, outside Drumsna, just off the R299, on the road to Keshcarrigan and Kilnagross. The walk should take about two hours - although a shorter version may be availed of if desired. Coffee and cake will be provided afterwards. Enquiries - please contact 07196 59970.
