Drumsna Boxing Club news

Drumsna Boxing Club enjoyed a weekend to be proud of at the Peter O’Donnell Memorial Box Cup in Donegal, with three boxers reaching finals and a memorable debut among the highlights.

The tournament honoured the late Peter O’Donnell, affectionately known as the “Voice of Irish Boxing”. A founder member of Raphoe Boxing Club and president of the Donegal County Boxing Board, Peter devoted decades to the sport, supporting boxers from their earliest days at club level through to representing Ireland internationally. His familiar voice welcomed generations of boxers into the ring, while his work as an official and Irish team manager reflected his lifelong commitment to the sport. The competition was a fitting tribute to a man who meant so much to boxing in Donegal and throughout Ireland.

Under the guidance of coaches Saidhbh and Sibhéal Greene, with the help of Christine Guckian, Drumsna were represented by Cian Guerriero, Oliver Stenson, Matylda Nowak and Sean Carlos.

Cian Guerriero’s tournament ended in the semi-final, while Oliver, Matylda and Sean progressed to their respective finals.

Matylda Nowak produced a particularly impressive performance in her first ever bout. Facing the current Irish champion was a demanding introduction to competitive boxing, but Matylda boxed brilliantly. Although she lost, her performance gave her every reason to be proud and plenty of encouragement for the future.

Oliver Stenson also faced formidable opposition, taking on a two-time national champion and Irish representative. Despite the defeat, Oliver delivered a great performance and showed that he belonged at that level.

Sean Carlos reached his final but conceded a walkover to the current English champion.

The weekend provided valuable experience for the Drumsna team, with their efforts against accomplished opposition giving the club plenty to build on. Credit also goes to Saidhbh and Sibheal Greene and Christine Guckian for their coaching, encouragement and support.
