Leitrim’s Butterfly House located at Doonkelly, Fivemilebourne has been shortlisted for the Irish Architecture Awards 2012. The public choice awards are held annually and celebrate some of the best building designs in the country.

The project undertaken by LID Architecture company based in Letterkenny and Belfast transformed an existing dormer cottage owned by Niamh McCabe with its small windows and low ceilings with an unusual butterfly extension.

The idea was to retain the existing cottage intact and to build an autonomous form that would “park” itself at one end. The social areas of the house (kitchen and living) are relocated to the extension, a dramatic sun-filled space with views out to the site and surrounding hills, while the old cottage contains all the ancillary and private spaces.

According to the architects, “The form and materiality of the Butterfly House evolved from relationships to the surrounding landscape rather than the vernacular language of the existing farm structures.”

Niamh McCabe, a painter, told the Leitrim Observer, “The extension has made everyday life so enjoyable! The design highlights the specific beauty and usefulness of both old and new - the light-filled spaciousness of the new being the main living space, and the cosier, more compact spaces of the old stone-built house being used for sleeping and utilitarian purposes. The extension is the centre of our home, always filled with activity, with visiting neighbours and family, and with changing light and colours making connections to the natural landscape around us. We love living here!”

LID Architecture said they are “really happy that the house has been nominated particularly as it was not a high-spec big-budget project.”

The RIAI has announced the 34 projects that have been shortlisted for the much anticipated 23rd RIAI Irish Architecture Awards 2012.

The category winners will be announced on 21 June 2012. You can vote in the awards at: {http://www.architectureawards.ie |Architecture awards}
