RIP: Leitrim man remembered as 'a true gentleman with a great sense of humour'

Tributes have poured in following the passing of Peter Hanley, who is being remembered as “a great community man”, and a proud Bornacoola native.
Memories are being shared following the passing of a Leitrim man who has been described as “a true gentleman with a great sense of humour.”
Peter Hanley, of Cloonmorris, Bornacoola, passed away on Tuesday, July 21, in the exceptional care of the staff at Shannon Lodge Nursing Home, Rooskey.
Peter was predeceased by his parents, John and Molly, and his infant sister, Julia. He was the beloved husband of Ann and devoted father of Marie Montgomery (Athenry) and Raymond (Clonshannagh).
He will be sadly missed by his wife and children, son-in-law Stephen, daughter-in-law Kitty, his adored grandchildren Alex, Matthew, Natanel, Aoife, Niamh and Shay, brother Sean T. and his partner Colette, brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, nephews, extended family, neighbours and many friends.
Tributes have been paid on RIP.ie following Peter’s passing.
“A proud Bornacoola man who made a great contribution on many fronts to his community and different parish organisations. A friendly and warm person who always had time for a chat. Petie was very proud of his family,” one person wrote.
Peter formerly worked as a prison officer. “I had the pleasure of working with Peter for a number of years in Castlerea and always enjoyed his company and found him to be a thorough gentleman,” another person shared.
Another tribute reflected on his commitment to the local GAA club: “Petie was a valued member of the Bornacoola GAA Executive for many years and took on many roles in the club. He gave his time and energy freely to the club and was a loyal supporter of the club teams and activities. Petie was such a friendly man with a warm smile, sharp wit and a welcome for all. He believed in the true spirit of the GAA — family, community, friendship, and pride in where we come from.”
Requiem Mass for Peter will take place on Thursday, July 23, at 11am in St Michael’s Church, Bornacoola (N41E421), followed by burial in Cloonmorris Cemetery.
Among the other messages of sympathy, one person described Peter as “A great community man and true gentleman,” while another wrote, “Peter was always a friendly and sociable man with a big wave always assured whenever he passed our home.”
