Edwina Guckian will feature on CountryWide with Philip Boucher-Hayes

A number of notable achievements have led RTÉ to choose Leitrim as its outside broadside location this weekend.

One of the guests on the Countrywide Show with Philip Boucher-Hayes on Saturday morning will be creator of Rambling Houses Project, Edwina Guckian.

Edwina is creating a series of rambling houses over the winter in Leitrim, where volunteers will bring old people to a fireside chat, a bit of music and dancing. The idea is to help combat rural isolation and loneliness in the dark winter evenings.

She will appeal to listeners to bring this project nationwide.

This project is supported by Leitrim County Council and Creative Ireland.

The show will feature Edwina, her house, the Drumsna area and her new 6-week-old baby along with her other two children there. Edwina will outline the story of where she got the rambling houses idea and what it entails. PJ Noonan, Edwina’s Neighbour and the reason why she is doing the project, plus another member of the community who would benefit from Rambling houses will also feature.

Music on the show will be with Fionnula Maxwell singer and volunteer along with Brian Moxty, box player.

Fionnuala Maxwell is a singer and teacher who has made it her mission to promote and recover Leitrim’s musical heritage. She finds the lyrics or music of often forgotten Leitrim songs in historical manuscripts or publications, and performs her own interpretations of them.

The show will also feature members of the All Ireland winning ladies Intermediate Football Championship, who had a civic reception from Leitrim County Council this week.

It will also include reports on social farming in Leitrim and some storytelling.
