Pedestrian crossing in place by Scoil Bríd Naofa
A child was struck by a car beside Ballinamore Childcare and Scoil Bríd Naofa at the beginning of April.
The child sustained injuries, and within the same month, the wheels of a car ran over another child’s feet.
These incidents have led to urgent calls for additional traffic calming measures at the location.
Cllr Brendan Barry proposed a motion at a Ballinamore Municipal District meeting, calling for immediate action. His motion stated, “Action must be taken now to avoid serious injuries or worse.”
In response, the Roads department explained that the Active Travel team is currently working with Scoil Bríd Naofa under the Safe Routes to School Programme.
The Active Travel team has already met with the school principal and An Taisce, an independent charity focused on preserving and protecting Ireland's natural and built heritage.
They are now awaiting a delivery plan from An Taisce before design options can be considered. Once agreed and approved, the works will progress.
The design will prioritise vulnerable road users, such as children crossing the road.
Elements of the project will aim to slow down traffic and create safer crossing points for children.
Leitrim County Council has previously installed traffic calming measures at the site, including driver feedback signage and a ramped, controlled pedestrian crossing.
However, as officials noted, infrastructure has its limits: “If someone decides to drive straight across a ramp without looking and knock a child down, there is no road design in the world that can cater for that,” District engineer Darragh O’Boyle added.
He described such action as “basically a criminal act” that “should be dealt with justly.”
The final designs will be presented to councillors for part 8 approval.
