Nearly all public lighting in Ballinamore MD is LED but there are 'large number of faults'

Many street lights in Ballinamore are not working.

Most of the lighting in Ballinamore is now LED lighting, it was revealed at a meeting this week however, if also came to light that there have been a significant amount of faults in the area. 

Cllr Enda McGloin asked Leitrim County Council how many streetlamps there are in the Ballinamore Municipal District and how many have been replaced with modern LED lamps to date.

He also asked what plans the council have to replace the remaining lamps. He was told that in Ballinamore MD, that there are 1,348, 1,221 of which are LED. The response continued: "Currently we have achieved 94% replacement of public lights with LED in the county. Our aim for 2025 was to reach 90% LED and we have exceeded this target."

It noted that many of the remaining lights are expensive to upgrade as adaptations or further works are required to allow upgrade works to take place, the response ended.

Cllr McGloin said that aside from being "climate friendly, they provide a better light overall to the street."

He commended the council on their progress to date. "Coming up the shortest day of the year, many people start work at between 7am and 8am and it's quite dark at that point so LED lighting in towns and villages is a great advantage."

Cllr Ita Reynolds-Flynn said that she was contacted by a resident who said that a number of lights were not working. 

She was told that to report a public lighting fault, individuals could visit electricskyline.ie and selecl the light that is not working. 

Cllr Gary Prior said that there was "quite a number" of lights "that are faulty or not working" in the district presently. "There is a huge amount of faults out there for some reason. I went in around Balliamore and Aughnasheelin and there were many faults. What is the time frame for the council coming out and fixing those lights."
