The pedestrian crossing at Treanmore, Mohill on the R201 is still dangerous, as traffic approaching from the Carrick side continuously fails to stop - McGowan
"The pedestrian crossing at Treanmore, Mohill on the R201 is still dangerous, as traffic approaching from the Carrick side continuously fails to stop. Are there any measures we can take to ensure it is a safe crossing point for pedestrians?" asked Cllr Enda Stenson, chairperson of the Carrick-on-Shannon municipal district at the most recent meeting.
He said that "nobody can see it and people come straight in from the Mohill Road and people are crossing; this is always going on."
He suggested that rumble strips ahead of the crossing may solve the issue. "Because it's on a junction; that's basically the issue," he said, adding that speed limits aren't always adhered to.
Cllr Thomas Mulligan supported the motion as did Cllr Sean McGowan.
The report by the roads office said the district office will review the signage at the Carrick approach to the crossing in Mohill.
District engineer, Darragh O'Boyle said there are driver feedback signs coming into that area where there is a 50km/h speed limit. "We will review it; it may be that the hedges are obscuring the advanced signage."
He said that "we can put down rumble strips to have advance warning of the pedestrian crossing because the ambient speed there is well above what they should be doing."
Following a suggestion by Cllr Mulligan, Mr O'Boyle said the council may also look into "changing the overhead lights to more intense LED lights."
