People concerned about speed through Dromod

Flooding issues also raised at council meeting

Ten cars detected speeding over 110km an hour in Newbridge

Cllr Sean McGowan said there's speed issues in Dromod

Cllr Sean McGowan said that people are concerned about the "speed at which traffic goes through Dromod village from both sides" when he called on Senior Engineer, Terry McGovern, and District Engineer, Darragh O’Boyle, to put in place a programme of works to carry out certain engineering works in Dromod.

He asked that the department provide up to four additional street gullies on the left side as you leave the village from the old Garda Barracks up towards Crowe's Garage at the Dromod Beg end of the village.

He also asked them to consider the possibility of providing table top ramps at each entrance into Dromod and one in the middle near the entrance to the old Western Meats factory to slow the traffic going through the village.

Cllr McGowan said that people want to "keep safe when out walking" and said the table top ramps have worked in Leitrim Village and Drumshanbo.

Cllr Des Guckian seconded the motion.

A report by the Roads office said that currently, the council have received drainage grants to replace the existing Harbour Road drainage.

It stated: "We can apply next year to see if funds become available for additional drainage works on the old N4 at the Garda station. We will require a low cost safety scheme to provide funding for table top junctions. If funding is available at the end of the year, we can consider raising the existing pedestrian crossing on the old N4."

In relation to the second half of the motion, the council said there are currently two ramped pedestrian crossings on the Dromod - Mohill road and the Active Travel section are now looking at measures to improve pedestrian movements towards the railway station.

The District Office will look at placing a raised crossing at the current pedestrian crossing in the village under funding from the TII for old national roads.

Leitrim County Council District Engineer, Darragh O'Boyle said he would liaise with the Active Travel department regarding the proposed installation of table top ramps in the town.

He said there are drainage works being carried out in Dromod and "that's a fairly good bite of the cherry for Dromod".

He continued that putting in "an additional gully is not a simple issue" and said that it involves surveys and road resurfacing and "demands that I seek specific funding under drainage."

He said he will investigate the area identified by Cllr McGowan but added that he was "unaware of the road ever being closed due to flooding in Dromod."

He added that the "one down by the harbour is a different issue where the road is half closed because of flooding so we have to address that."
