For the past two and half years, parents of adults with disabilities in Leitrim have been advocating for a respite facility for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Following a meeting on September 20 at the Bush Hotel in Carrick-on-Shannon with HSE representatives, parents and politicians, the HSE identified, through local authorities, three potential locations in the greater Ballinamore area.

A new respite care unit will be built in Carrick-on-Shannon, with plans to go out for tender in the first quarter of 2025.

Recently, Sligo-Leitrim TD Frank Feighan raised the issue of the promised new respite care unit for South Leitrim in the Dáil through a parliamentary question to the Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly TD.

Deputy Feighan received a reply directly from the HSE outlining the position.

In their reply the HSE and Brian O’Connell, Interim National Director Capital and Estates stated that the project for the provision of a new Adult Respite Care Unit in Carrick on Shannon is well underway.

Stage 2b (Developed Design and approval of Statutory condition) approval has been received, and planning permission has been granted.

Capital and Estates section of the HSE are currently in the process of completing the detailed design (Stage 2c) element of this project.

Subject to approval of Stage 2c, it is anticipated the tender package could go to the market for contractors for the works in Q1 of 2025.

“I am glad to learn that service users have been kept up to date on the project development stages during the design of this project.

“The building has been designed by architects with significant expertise in delivering healthcare projects and has incorporated best practice.

“My hope now is that there remains momentum going forward and that we continue to see progress on the new respite centre from early 2025 and that a contract can be awarded before next summer,” concluded Deputy Feighan.
