The notice from Uisce Éireann follows an increase in water usage from the Carrick-on-Shannon Water Treatment Plant in recent days.

Uisce Éireann urges customers in South Leitrim to continue to conserve water

Uisce Éireann is urging customers across South Leitrim to continue efforts to conserve water and protect supply.

Following an increase in water usage by households and businesses supplied by Carrick-on-Shannon Water Treatment Plant, customers are being asked to be mindful of their usage, do not run taps to prevent freezing, allow supply to catch up with demand and enable reservoirs to fully replenish.

High usage can lead to pressure reductions which can impact the supply to customers.

To conserve water at home you can take shorter showers, fix any dripping taps or leaking toilets in your home and turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving to save up to six litres of water per minute.

Speaking about conserving water, Uisce Éireann’s Kevin Love said: “There has been a noticeable increase in water demand across South Leitrim in recent days. We are continuing to ask customers in this area to conserve water to give the reservoirs time to replenish.

“Our crews have also repaired bursts on the network in the Ballinamore area and further leakage reduction works are underway in the county.

“Any reduction that customers can make in their usage can collectively result in significant supply improvements for all homes and businesses.

“We would also urge members of the public to continue to report any leaks or bursts on the public water network to our Customer Care Team on 1800 278 278, which is open 24/7.”

For saving water on the farm, it’s advised to watch out for overflowing troughs, use scrapers and brushes to remove solid waste from yards and pens before hosing, collect rainwater harvesting, and take action to protect water sources.

This includes avoiding contamination of surface waters by reducing or eliminating access to livestock by fencing off watercourses.

Pollution containing animal faeces can affect the water environment, nutrients and soil. Destroyed bankside vegetation can also contribute to flooding.

“It’s important that we all consider our water usage and look at simple yet impactful ways to conserve water. It can sometimes be difficult to know where to start, but even small changes can make a significant difference,” Kevin Love added.
