Concerns raised over lack of lighting in Leitrim estate

The Lock estate in Rooskey is expected to progress towards being taken in charge, with the public consultation process anticipated to commence by late Summer of this year, Carrick-on-Shannon municipal district has heard.

At the recent meeting of Carrick-on-Shannon MD, Cllr Sean McGowan inquired about the status of the application for taking in charge of the estate. He also highlighted the lack of public lighting, emphasising that it is extremely dark for residents and those who walk around the estate.

“It’s certainly something that needs to be done, it’s only a small estate. We shouldn’t have to wait this long for it to be taken in charge,” Cllr McGowan said.

A reply from the Economic Development explained that after the public consultation process, it is intended to present the taking in charge to the members of Carrick-on-Shannon MD by the end of 2025 to enable the road within the estate to become a public road.

The provision of streetlights were not included in the planning application of The Lock estate, therefore lighting cannot be provided as part of the taking in charge process.

Cllr McGowan inquired if there was some funding stream that could be sought to implement lighting.

However, councillors were told that if the Council were to install lights before the estate is officially taken in charge, they would assume liability.

“The provision of street lighting within this estate will be dependent on the identification of a funding stream where it will have to compete with other locations throughout the county where street lights have been requested,” the reply concluded.
