Push for safer walking route linking Leitrim estates

Cllr Maeve Reynolds proposed a motion at December's meeting of Carrick-on-Shannon MD advocating for the installation of streetlights in two Mohill estates to improve safety.

Push for safer walking route linking Leitrim estates

At December’s meeting of Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District, Cllr Maeve Reynolds urged Leitrim County Council to install street lights between housing estates, Ard na Sí and Silabh View in Mohill.

“Six lights would complete a safe, well lit, walking route linking these estates to the already illuminating Carrick road, improving safety and accessibility for all residents.

“It’s only six lights that would complete a walking route within the 50 kilometre speed limit of the town, link up between estates,” Cllr Reynolds said.

Cllr Reynolds remarked that the around €20,000 required to install the lights is a reasonable investment for something that would benefit the entire community.

Leitrim County Council currently do not have funding available to install these lights, but alternative funding is available through the Town and Village Scheme and CLÁR.

“I think it should be at the top of the pile for this funding because it makes a lot of sense,” Cllr Reynolds added.

“It’s a dark enough area and six lights would certainly do the job,” Cllr McGowan commented.

All elected members of Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District supported Cllr Reynolds’ motion.
