Retention permission has been granted to convert an office building in Hartley Business Park, Carrick-on-Shannon into an Islamic Cultural Centre, subject to three conditions.
The centre will serve over 100 local families who currently lack access to a mosque.
Supporter have highlighted its potential to foster cultural understanding and enrich the town’s social diversity.
In December, an anonymous letter opposing the development circulated among several local businesses.
The letter was reported to the Gardaí, with some residents condemning the letter as ‘racist.’
Leitrim County Council approved the project on March 4, imposing three conditions.
This includes that the development must adhere strictly to the approved plans and specifications.
No external call to prayer or public address system will be permitted to protect local amenities.
Additionally, within two months, revised signage details for the building’s front elevation must be submitted to the Planning Authority for approval.
