Alessandro Nikolla, a talented mixologist from Leitrim, is set to represent Ireland at a major cocktail competition in Gurugram, Delhi, India - the heart of the country’s vibrant cocktail culture.

Hosted by the Indian Bartenders Guild, the event will take place from April 24 to 28 and will feature 16 international competitors. Alessandro is proud to represent not only Ireland, but Buffalo Boy restaurant in Carrick-on-Shannon where he works.

For his competition entry, Alessandro has created a unique spin on the classic gimlet, using Drumshanbo Gin. His cocktail also incorporates Rooh Afza, a rose syrup popular in India and Pakistan, as well as a homemade Darjeeling tea tincture and cardamom, both staples in Indian cuisine.

Alessandro’s journey into mixology started at Buffalo Boy, where he learned everything on the job.

“I fell in love with mixology as a hobby and job,” Alessandro said.

“Initially I was interested in food but after seeing the huge selection of drinks at Buffalo after my first day I knew I wanted to learn more about drinks,” he added.

He later became involved in international competitions, including his win representing Ireland in France after winning the Monin cup last December.

Alessandro was also awarded the 2025 Irish Bartenders Association Ireland Champion.

Buffalo Boy also played a key role in Alessandro’s wine education, supporting him as he completed his WSET 2 exams with distinction while also studying for his bar management degree.

The competition in India offers a €1,000 cash prize, and Alessandro is eager to showcase his skills and show some Leitrim representation on the international stage.
