Leitrim parents advocating for residential care with Cllr Paddy O'Rourke and Cllr Gary Prior
The HSE has secured a 337 square metre property in South Leitrim for the development of a new residential care home.
Located in Fenagh, the purchase follows a sale agreement reached last November with the previous owners and a local auctioneer.
This marks a major milestone after almost three years of advocacy by parents seeking a suitable facility. Leitrim and Monaghan are currently the only two counties in Ireland without full-time residential care.
The property acquired will house a four-bed residential unit.
Fianna Fáil councillor Gary Prior, who has been working closely with parents advocating for a residential home, has strongly welcomed the news.
“This is truly good news for everyone involved,” Cllr Prior stated, emphasising the long-awaited progress in addressing local care needs.
“In addition to this significant development, further property acquisitions will be necessary to meet future demands for residential care in Leitrim,” he added.
Meanwhile, there is positive progress on another front—a respite care home is set to be developed on HSE-owned land in Carrick-on-Shannon.
Tenders for the project have now been returned to the department for assessment, and officials are hopeful that construction work will begin soon.
Both projects represent a substantial step forward in enhancing care services for the community, providing much-needed facilities for vulnerable residents and their families.
Cllr Prior has paid tribute to all the family members who persevered over the last three years to make this happen, and also to the local representatives who helped and supported especially over the last year to bring this to a successful outcome, but stressed there is “still much more work to be done.”
