County council grants planning permission for new Baptist church space in Leitrim town

Leitrim County Council has granted planning permission for a building on Bridge Street in Carrick-on-Shannon to be converted into a congregation space for the local branch of the Baptist Church.

The ground floor of the building, located at Bridge Street, Townparks, Carrick-on-Shannon (N41 E447), was previously used as a sandwich shop but will now be renovated to serve as a venue for the Baptist Church to hold meetings and services.

The Baptist congregation in Carrick-on-Shannon had previously gathered in a space on Park Lane. However, as the congregation grew, they moved their meetings in recent years to Gaelscoil Liatroma.

Local pastor Josh Moore says that not having a designated space has sometimes made it difficult to find suitable venues for gatherings outside of regular services. He believes that having a more permanent and flexible location on Bridge Street will benefit the community.

“We just thought, we need to try this again — to have a unit that’s designated for any of the meetings we might hold during the week,” said Pastor Josh Moore of Carrick Baptist Church.

He adds that the congregation, which has around 70 members, hopes to move into the new premises on Bridge Street by August 3rd, following some light renovations.

Planning permission was granted by Leitrim County Council on Monday without any additional conditions needing to be met.
