In a tribute from the staff, parents and students of Scoil Mhuire, the school community has marked the retirement of Principal Mrs Caroline Healy after 43 years of service to education and the Carrick community.

After an extraordinary 43 years of service to education and to the Carrick community, Scoil Mhuire has said a fond farewell to its Principal, Mrs Caroline Healy, as she begins her retirement.

Caroline began her teaching career in 1983 after completing her B.Ed. in St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra. She began teaching in what was then Scoil na Maighdine Muire before spending a short period in St Joseph’s in Longford town, returning to Carrick the following year.

In 2001, following the retirement of Mrs Kitty Gately, Caroline was appointed Principal — a position she held with great dedication for almost 25 years.

One of the most significant chapters of her career came in 2013, when she oversaw the amalgamation of Scoil na Maighdine Muire and St Mary’s Boys’ School, creating Scoil Mhuire as it is known today.

During her 43 years in education, Caroline witnessed enormous changes in the school environment, from blackboards to interactive boards, from textbooks to Chromebooks and iPads, and through countless changes to the curriculum.

Yet, throughout it all, one thing remained constant — her commitment to the children in her care and to the wider school community.

Caroline embraced every opportunity to enhance the experience of her pupils, supporting initiatives across wellbeing, gardening, STEM, road safety, cycling, digital literacy, languages, sustainability and many more.

However, her greatest achievement was perhaps less tangible: she created a school where children felt welcomed, valued, safe and that they belonged.

Generations of pupils have passed through Scoil Mhuire during Caroline’s time as Principal, and many will remember her warmth, kindness and ability to know every child by name.

She also leaves behind a lasting legacy among the staff she supported and encouraged throughout her years as Principal.

Caroline’s retirement was marked with a special celebration Mass on Thursday, where staff, pupils, parents and members of the wider school community came together to recognise her contribution.

The tribute paid to Caroline reflected the affection in which she is held throughout Scoil Mhuire. She was described not only as a leader, but as a colleague, a friend and someone who was always there to keep the ship afloat, through everything from school concerts and sports days to inspections, Wi-Fi outages and even a pandemic.

The Parents’ Association also paid tribute to Caroline, highlighting the kindness and care she showed to every child and family and the sense of belonging she created within the school.

They described it as an honour and a privilege to have worked alongside her and expressed their gratitude for everything she had done for Scoil Mhuire and the Carrick community.

After 43 years of dedication, Caroline now begins a new chapter.

While her presence at the heart of Scoil Mhuire will be greatly missed, there is enormous gratitude for the contribution she has made and the lives she has touched throughout her career.

As she passes the Scoil Mhuire baton to new Principal Mr Kelly, the entire school community wishes him every success in his new role.

For Caroline, however, the next chapter is about enjoying the things that a busy school career sometimes left little time for — family, friends, grandchildren, holidays, long walks, reading, laughter and plenty of relaxed mornings.

Caroline may be retiring from Scoil Mhuire, but she will always remain a very special part of its story.

From the pupils, staff, parents, past pupils and wider Scoil Mhuire community: thank you, Caroline, for 43 wonderful years. You will be greatly missed, and the school community wishes you a long, happy, healthy and very well-deserved retirement.
