Leitrim County Fire Service will engage with Uisce Éireann to recommend the installation of a fire hydrant at Clooncorrick in Carrigallen, following a fire safety audit that revealed the only water supply in the area comes from a rooftop tank.

Cllr Paddy O’Rourke brought forward a motion at a meeting of Ballinamore Municipal District, requesting that Leitrim County Council, as part of its fire prevention programme, arrange with Uisce Éireann to install a fire hydrant at the site.

Cllr O’Rourke stated that due to the presence of an industry, as many as 60 people work at Clooncorrick, in addition to residents in private homes on the road.

He warned that relying on a rooftop tank for water is “grossly inadequate in the event of an emergency.”

In response, the Council said Leitrim County Fire Service will engage with Uisce Éireann to determine the existing water supply infrastructure in the area. If it is deemed insufficient, the Fire Service will recommend Uisce Éireann to install a fire hydrant at the most suitable locations to support firefighting efforts.

The response also highlighted that in 2023, €220,000 in capital funding was allocated to Leitrim County Fire Service for a state-of-the-art water tanker with an 8,000-litre capacity, based at Ballinamore Fire Station.

This tanker is used to supplement firefighting water supplies throughout the county.

However, Cllr O’Rourke pointed out, “8000 litres of water available in Ballinamore Fire Station is little comfort to people in Drumcoura and Carrigallen where there’s 60 people in one area working and a number of residents close by on a road that isn’t serviced with a fire hydrant.”
