RIP: Retired principal remembered as 'true gentleman'

Comments have been pouring-in in honour of Padraig McLoughlin, who served as principal of the Vocational school in Drumshanbo between 1973 and 2001, who passed away this week.

Padraig first joined the school in Leitrim as a science teacher before taking on the role of deputy Principal and then as principal.

His death occurred on Tuesday, 6 May, 2025.

Padraig died peacefully, surrounded by his family and with the kind and helpful care of staff at Sligo University Hospital on Tuesday, 6 May.

Adored husband of Monica, dearly loved father of Norma. Ramona, Lassarina, Sabina and Padraig, father-in-law of Tom, grandfather of Jack and Kate, brother of Helen, brother-in-law of Willie. Also remembering his deceased parents Kathleen and Frank and his late sister Margaret. Sadly missed by his wife, children, sister, grandchildren, son-in -law, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, cousins, nephews, nieces, grandnieces and grandnephews.

There were many messages of condolences for the former principal online with one person calling him "a true gentleman" and noting he was "loved and respected by all."

Another poster on RIP.ie spoke of how Mr McLoughlin "gave sterling service in his role as principal of DVS and left an unparalleled legacy as chairman of Arigna Leader. He will be missed but not forgotten."
He was also described as a "man who gave so much to this community both educationally and community involvement over many years" with another commenter stating that as "principal of DVS, Padraig ensured that all students not only reached their full potential academically but also in the area of extra curricular; be it football, volleyball or basketball. May he be reunited with those gone before him and may Padraig now rest in peace."
Others described him as a "man of exceptional depth, decency and dignity in his family circle, in the teaching profession and in the wider community" and "a dedicated and caring teacher" as well as simply "a true gentleman who always looked out for his staff and students."
Another person complimented his "dedication to the wider community as Chairperson of the Joe Mooney Summer School and The Mayflower Community Centre" saying it was "truly admirable. He had a lasting impact on so many lives in our community" while another commenter said he was a "remarkable leader and dedicated community activist. His legacy lives on through the vibrant community projects he helped bring to life."
Reposing at his home on Friday, 9 May, from 3pm to 8pm. Requiem Mass in St Patrick's Church, Drumshanbo at 12 noon on Saturday, 10 May, followed by burial in Drumshanbo Cemetery. Funeral Mass can be viewed live on https://www.churchtv.ie/drumshanbo/ and on the Drumshanbo Parish Facebook Page.
