Concerns over speeding and traffic safety near local businesses in Drumshanbo have prompted calls for new measures, but land limitations are preventing significant improvements.

Cllr Enda McGloin called on Ballinamore M.D. at October’s meeting to consider traffic calming and speed reduction measures at Barna Waste and McLoughlin Plant Business at Ardcolum, Drumshanbo.

In his motion, Cllr McGloin wrote that locals are concerned at the speed along the R280 and the number of vehicles turning into the business premises.

“I raised this issue about two or three years ago. This is a very straight stretch of road that eventually takes a turn.

“While warning signs would be helpful, I’m still concerned about allowing vehicles to cross over, especially coming from Carrick-on-Shannon side, that we need to look at improving road markings,” Cllr McGloin said.

Cllr McGloin suggested that the installation of an island would be helpful, however there is not enough space for this to take place.

“I know Road Design has looked at this before. I still would be hopeful of some level of an island to allow traffic to cross.”

Cllr Brendan Barry seconded Cllr McGloin’s motion.

However, no new traffic control measures will be implemented here due to land constraints.

District engineer Darragh O’Boyle told Ballinamore M.D. that advanced warning signs can be erected, but there isn’t enough land to put in a right turning lane.

To build this lane, additional land would need to be purchased, requiring a specific improvement grant which Ballinamore M.D. currently does not have.

“We can improve the road markings,” Mr O’Boyle said.

The Roads department will conduct a health check of the road.
