Leitrim road set for major upgrade in 2025, pending funding approval

Ballinamore councillors heard that funding for road improvements from Drumshanbo to Galley Bridge has been submitted under the Climate Action Works programme for 2025.

Leitrim road set for major upgrade in 2025, pending funding approval

Plans for improvement works on the stretch of road from Drumshanbo to Galley Bridge are scheduled for 2025, subject to funding.

Cllr Enda McGloin proposed a motion asking Ballinamore MD to consider carrying out works at this location.

“It's very rough terrain, there’s a lot of water there and it’s generally messy. I understand that some of the stone water drains are not active,” Cllr McGloin said.

Works for this road have been submitted for Climate Action Works in 2025. This will involve replacing the drainage system and creating a proper bunded verge to deter drivers parking on the stretch of road and damaging the drainage pipe.

Cllr McGloin welcomed the answer from the Roads department, stating he was pleased with it.

“Hopefully by mid 2025 it can be much tidier and improve the entrance to the town,” he added.

Cllr Brendan Barry asked what a proper bunded verge would mean. “I don’t think people would be happy if a mound was created,” he commented.

District engineer Darragh O’Boyle explained that the bunding is to stop people from parking at that location, as if people park there the drainage becomes destroyed, which has happened previously.

“If people park there and destroy the drainage then you’re back to square one,” he told councillors.

If landowners are against the proper bunded verge, the Council will still need to install something to prevent cars from parking there. The Council won’t take any action that contradicts the preferences of homeowners, and will proceed with drainage works to and install some type of obstacle to keep vehicles on the road.

They aim to address these concerns in a way that satisfies everyone, provided they receive the necessary funding.
