A €90 million investment package has been announced for the 2026 Climate Action Summer Works Scheme, confirming approval for 297 projects across the country, including 10 schools in Leitrim, Sligo and South Donegal.
The funding package includes €30 million ring-fenced specifically for the refurbishment and modernisation of science laboratories in post-primary schools, supporting the Department’s ongoing curricular redevelopment programme and the rollout of the new Leaving Certificate science specifications.
The scheme will support works including science lab renewal, roof repair, window replacement, mechanical and electrical upgrades, as well as essential maintenance. Procurement and delivery are expected to take place predominantly during Summer 2026.
In Leitrim, Drumshanbo Vocational School received funding for Climate Action and Science Labs, while Mohill Community College received funding for Climate Action and Electrical Works. Across the north west, a primary school in Ballyshannon, two in Sligo, and five secondary schools in Sligo have also received funding.

Minister Marian Harkin welcomed the funding for the north west, highlighting the timeliness of the scheme’s focus on climate action and sustainability.
“Schools will now be able to undertake a wide range of climate-focused works, from insulation and LED lighting to EV chargers and bike facilities, all of which support the Government’s broader climate goals. These upgrades will reduce energy use, improve comfort and safety, and help schools transition to a more sustainable future,” said Minister Harkin.
“The prioritisation of science laboratory refurbishment is especially significant. It ensures that students in our region will have access to modern, high-quality facilities that support hands-on learning and are aligned with the evolving Leaving Certificate curriculum.
“Investment in our school estate is essential to ensuring equality of opportunity for every child. I am delighted that schools in Sligo, Leitrim and South Donegal have been strongly represented in this announcement, and I look forward to seeing these projects progress over the coming months,” Minister Harkin concluded.
