Connacht GAA
Steven Poacher's Leitrim Senior footballers will open their 2026 season in Orchard Park, Elphin on Sunday, January 4, 2026 after Connacht GAA announced their fixture plan for next year, confirming that Markievicz Park will hold the Connacht Senior Championship clash between Leitrim and Sligo on Sunday April 12, next year.
Connacht GAA officially released their fixture list for the year on Thursday with two FBD Insurance Connacht Leagues on Saturday January 3, with Steven Poacher's side making the short trip to Elphin to take on new Roscommon manager Mark Dowd in the first game of the season.
With a new format in the competition, Leitrim will travel to Tuam to take on Galway on Saturday January 10, with all six teams taking part in this year's competition guaranteed a further game the following weeks in a series of finals. With the NUI Galway Connacht GAA AirDome still out of action, all the games will take place at various county grounds other than London's two games against Galway and Sligo, which are being held in the Connacht Centre of Excellence on January 3 and 4.
With a gap between the National League Finals and the start of the Provincial championship, Leitrim's trip to Markievicz Park will take place on Sunday April 12, a day that will also see Roscommon travel to Gaelic Park in New York to take on the Exiles while Mayo are in action the day before, Saturday April 11, in McGovern Emerald Park in Ruislip when they take on London in the first game of the Connacht championship.
The semi-finals are fixed for the weekend of April 25-26, with Leitrim set to enjoy home advantage against reigning champions Galway, should Steven Poacher's side get the better of Sligo in the quarter-final.
LEITRIM FLAVOUR TO FERMANAGH'S NEW SENIOR MANAGEMENT TEAM
It was expected that Leitrim's clash with Sligo would take place in either Tubbercurry or a venue outside the county due to resurfacing works on the playing surface at the famed Sligo venue but in surprise news, Sligo GAA announced on Wednesday evening that the revamped pitch surface at Markievicz Park could be in a position to host matches in the spring and early summer of next year.
Leitrim Minors, under Danny Beck & Ciaran Kennedy, open their championship campaign on Friday March 20, with a trip to Galway with another away trip to take on Roscommon with home games against Mayo and Sligo.
New U20 manager Enda Lyons will see his team open their quest for Connacht glory by hosting Galway while fellow Connacht giants Mayo are also visitors to Leitrim. The Green & Gold will be on the road for their games against Sligo and Roscommon.
