The late Michael Roche RIP.
We remember the passing on February 20, 2023, of Mr Michael Roche of Cloonmore, Tuam, Co Galway.
Michael, a Kerry native, was well known and highly regarded in Leitrim and North Roscommon for his work as manager of the Agricultural Institute (later Teagasc) economic test farm in Drumboylan from 1965 to 1977.
Known locally as the ‘model farm’, it was set up on the initiative of parish priest Fr. Raymond Browne and served to test and showcase innovative and locally viable farming methods at a time when the region was beset by unemployment and emigration.
Michael, ably supported by Mikey Keane, served the community with a trademark combination of expertise, dedication, and humour.
Open days and demonstrations drew farmers from throughout North Connaught and the farm was featured on RTÉ television several times.
Michael, his wife Sheila, and their five children made a great contribution to community life in the area, notably through their involvement with the Breffni Players and with the Community Games.
Michael was also involved in setting up Drumshanbo Mart.
After leaving Drumboylan, Michael managed the Teagasc Dairy Research unit in Belclare, Tuam and was a founding member of the Belclare Sheep Breeders’ Society.
He is survived by his wife Sheila and children Jenny, David, Almha, Stephen and Deirdre. Messages of condolence and remembrance can be sent to the family at www.rip.ie
May Michael Rest In Peace.
