Landowners will have say in Carrick–on-Shannon to Dromod Road project

Carrick-on-Shannon to Dromod Road project

Landowners will have their say on the Carrick-on-Shannon to Dromod Road project, members of Leitrim County Council were assured recently.
They were also told that the project is moving into Phase 3 with the design stage now underway.

"Everything that the public needs to be aware of is on the website; it couldn't be any more transparent," Joseph Gilhooly, Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Services, Economic. Development, Planning and Infrastructural Services told members with the council official noting that people are mostly concerned about where the road is going to be built and the "corridor in which the road will ultimately be put, is available on the website."

He stressed that landowners will be in communication with the council's design team through their office and also Leitrim Regional Design Office (RDO) to consider the implications the project will have on individuals.

The preferred design will then go through a statutory public consultation process.

He was responding to Cllr Des Guckian who said he had a number of concerns including his fear "there will be very little access to this new route and it will cut off farmers from parts of their lands".

Cllr Guckian added that estate residents on the edge of Carrick fear the new road will be "just beside where they live".

Cllr Sean McGowan said that he "recognised that Carrick needs to be bypassed" and "that is the priority to try and get that done as soon as possible."

Mr Gilhooly explained that Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) have given approval to proceed to the Phase 3 Design and Environmental Evaluation stage and the council have received an allocation of €2.5m to complete this stage. This phase will take around 18 months to complete, he noted.

He told members that the Minister wishes to see prioritisation afforded to the provision of the bypass with plans to link up with the Dromod/Rooskey bypass which is just outside Dromod, to be looked at further down the road.
