Councillors praised response of an Garda Síochána and the Council to anti social behaviour in Mohill
If parents don't step in, antisocial behaviour could get “out of hand”, said Cllr Thomas Mulligan at a recent meeting where he spoke of the actions taken by the Council and the local Gardaí to crack down on the issue in Mohill.
Last week, the Leitrim Observer reported that following a meeting with the acting Superintendent, executive staff from An Garda Síochána and staff from the Council housing office, it was decided that an increased “Garda presence in Mohill” would be sought.
“I think we have seen an improvement,” said Cllr Mulligan at the latest Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District meeting, adding that he would hope to see the efforts continued.
He praised efforts by the Council to implement a tougher screening process for those applying for housing in the area in order to identify individuals who have been in trouble before.
Cllr Enda Stenson who chaired the meeting said he has “noticed a greater presence of Gardaí driving around” adding, “I know from talking to people there has been an improvement”.
Cllr Des Guckian said that he would like to see more Gardaí operating from Mohill Garda Station. He said that “there was petrol poured through letter boxes at night to intimidate people'' and that the situation in Lahard was “totally out of hand”.
Cllr Mulligan said he hoped that the parents of children who may be engaging in this behaviour would step in. "I would ask the parents of young children that might be involved, to take more responsibility for underage children. It's not a lot to ask that they would know where young children are and what they get up to.”
