No longer any excuse for delay in delivering new Garda station for Sligo

Sligo Garda Station

Sligo/Leitrim TD Marian Harkin has called on the Minister for Justice for political support in speeding up the construction of a new Garda station for Sligo. Speaking in the Dáil Ms Harkin said that there was an urgent need for the new station and no longer an excuse for the delay.

“Up to recently we were part of the Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal division and the excuse given for not proceeding with the new Sligo Garda station was that the divisional headquarters was in Letterkenny. However, a realignment has taken place whereby Sligo Leitrim is now a division in its own right with Sligo as the headquarters,” the Deputy said, “There is now no impediment to proceeding with the planned and promised new Garda station in Sligo, a project that will possibly include co-location with a new fire station.

While acknowledging that the provision of Garda stations is ultimately the responsibility of the Garda Commissioner, Ms Harkin reminded Minister James Browne, Minister for State at the Department of Justice, that she was not looking for something that was not already planned and provided for. “The Sligo site was purchased by the OPW and funding to build the new station was put in place before the last election,” she said.

“Given that all that is in place I am asking you to please contact the Minister for Justice and ask her for her full political support in finally getting a new Garda station for Sligo,” Deputy Harkin concluded.

Minister Brown promised to bring the concerns to the Minister for Justice.
