Targeted checkpoints for 'boy racers' in Cortober/Carrick
Cllr Finola Armstrong-McGuire asked the County Leitrim Joint Policing Committee meeting this month what measures have been "taken in policing the speed and noise of 'boy racers' on our roads at night.
"Particularly, I ask about the area of Cortober in Carrick and where we see evidence of speed and erratic driving evident on roads further from the town,£ she said.
She stated it was "causing a lot of annoyance" adding that they are "our teenagers, our children and our twenty-somethings" adding that "it's dangerous and may be drug-related."
Inspector Carla Curry noted that the issue was also raised at a public meeting in Mohill and said that "since then, I discussed the issue with the roads policing unit and they are going to carry proactive checkpoints to target that area."
She said they are also going to organise joint checkpoints with the Garda Public Service Vehicle (PSV) Inspector to examine vehicles under the Construction and Use of Vehicles Regulations Act 2010.
Inspector Curry added that she would be "very much advocating for people to ring the Gardaí when they hear it so that we can provide a response there."
