Taoiseach to visit Leitrim Village this morning

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar will meet householders and business owners affected by Storm Fergus in Leitrim Village this morning, Monday, December 11, at approximately 11.15am.

The Taoiseach will see first hand the damage that was caused to property in the village following the tornado that swept through the area yesterday lunch time.

Meanwhile, Deputy Frank Feighan speaking about the freak weather event said, “It is so hard to believe that so much damage can be done in such a short time, I am relieved that nobody was seriously injured considering the destruction to buildings and cars”, he stated after he visited Leitrim Village on Sunday.

“This event is a ‘freak of nature’, a once in a lifetime event but the legacy left will be felt so badly by the affected property owners.

“I witnessed there, destruction to the local businesses, private houses and cars alongside the damage done to local infrastructure when I visited Leitrim Village with local FG councillors Finola Armstrong Maguire and Enda McGloin.

“I want to thank the first responders, Leitrim Co Council, their engineers, outdoor staff, and Leitrim Fire Service alongside local Gardaí for their response and ensuring that people were safe in the aftermath of this event.

“I wish to also acknowledge the local community who came out to assist their neighbours impacted by this terrible event.

“I have written this evening to Government colleagues to see what, if any public supports are available to property owners effected, as soon as I have some information, I will make that available.

“I will do what I can as the local TD to ensure that all the relevant stakeholders do what is possible to support this community impacted so badly by this storm”, concluded Deputy Feighan.
