A 21-year-old Geography and Political Science graduate announces his candidacy as the first Green Party representative for the Ballinamore Local Electoral Area (LEA) in Leitrim County Council.
Adam Ó Ceallaigh is a current student at Trinity College Dublin and hopes to bring a fresh perspective and unwavering commitment to addressing crucial issues, especially those concerning young people and the environment.
As the grandson of Paddy and Betty McManus from Drumshanbo, he has a strong understanding of the community's issues.
Motivated by a passion for climate action, Adam was drawn to the Green Party because of its dedication to community sustainability.
His admiration for the party's approach in the 2019 local elections, where young candidates were actively involved, had a significant impact on him.
Adam identifies housing as a vital concern for young people but emphasises that it cannot be addressed in isolation.
According to him, addressing issues such as transportation and social outlets allows the well-thought-out policy to deliver vibrant and affordable communities in rural Ireland.
His vision involves creating environments and structures where young people can live, work, build relationships, and have a solid future for their families in rural areas.
Adam is the youngest Green Party candidate nationwide and is not phased by the need to go against the convention at the age at which people get involved in politics. He is also the youngest to contest for a seat in the Ballinamore LEA.
"At no time in history has there been such a pressing need for greater involvement in politics, specifically from young people. Young people don't just want to be represented in politics; we want to participate in the decisions that affect our future," Adam said.
He sees this as a unique opportunity to offer the people, especially the youth of Leitrim, an essential alternative voice and perspective in electoral politics.
