Two communities are mourning the loss of Bridget (Delia) Higgins (née Kiernan), who peacefully departed this world on Sunday, March 3, 2024, in her 98th year.

Formerly of Aughawillen, Carrigallen, Co Leitrim and Ballyduffy, Moyne, Co Longford, Delia, as she was affectionately known, passed away at her residence in the comforting care of her loving family.

Born into a world that has witnessed nearly a century of change, Delia was predeceased by her parents, sisters, brothers, infant daughter Bernadette, husband James, son Jim, daughter Mary Bannon, daughter-in-law Mary Higgins, and great-grandson Daniel.

Delia will be remembered with fondness and love by her daughters Patricia Ward and Angela Mulligan, sons-in-law Charlie Ward, Frank Mulligan, and Hugh Bannon, as well as her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, neighbors, caregivers, and a wide circle of friends.

Friends and family have paid their respects online to the beloved matriarch.

One tribute wrote: "I had the pleasure of enjoying her hospitality & delicious boxty on quite a few occasions. May she rest in peace after a great life well spent."

While another mourning friend said: "Farewell Delia, my Aunt Anna B's great friend. Many a cup of tea you both shared in the back kitchen of her pub. You left a great family legacy, which you were fortunate to witness permeate through three generations, to whom we extend our deepest condolences."

The community paid their respects during the repose at Lakelands Funeral Home, Dublin Road, Cavan H12RF78, on Monday, March 4. Delia's remains were then brought to her residence for close family, neighbours, and friends to bid their final farewell.

Funeral Mass to celebrate Delia's life was held in St Mary’s Church, Carrigallen, Co Leitrim, on Tuesday, March 5. Following the Mass, Delia was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.
