Leitrim County Council approves sports facility upgrade in Drumshanbo

Planning permission has been granted from Leitrim County Council for a renovation project at Carricknabrack, Drumshanbo which will see significant enhancements to sport facilities. The project, undertaken by the Mayflower Community Centre, aims to revitalise the local basketball and volleyball courts.

The planned upgrades include renovating and restoring the existing volleyball and basketball courts, erecting new boundary fencing around the periphery of the courts, establishing floodlighting and constructing a storage shed and all ancillary works.

The renovated volleyball court in Drumshanbo will be the third outside court in the country outside of Galway and Dublin.

“It’s fantastic news for the area and for the community,” said Ita Grey, treasurer of the Mayflower Community Centre.

“We have a lot of local children in our national school and a number of immigrants that have come into the area and all of these facilities will be available to the school during the school day and to the wider community after that.”

The renovation of the courts will hopefully see sporting events being held in Drumshanbo.

“We’ll be liaising with Volleyball Ireland and Basketball Ireland to hold events as a local training area and competitions in time to come,” Ita explained.

“Drumshanbo Vocational School would be very successful as a school representing in national and international championships but this will elevate their chances, having an outdoor court as well as inside.

The ground in Carricknabrack is owned by the Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim ETB, who provided a lease to Mayfair Community Centre for the project.

“Without them, it wouldn’t have been possible,” Ita said.

“The national bodies have been very supportive and without the wonderful support of Leitrim County Council, we wouldn't be able to achieve this facility on a local level ourselves.”

The renovated courts offer children and adolescents an excellent opportunity to advance in sports and engage in activities beyond GAA.

“We have wonderful GAA facilities and now this gives more wider options for children. Our catchment area goes into Roscommon and Arigna so the benefit will be huge,” Ita remarked.
