Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District has heard a call for the Housing department and the Gardaí to collaborate in addressing the intimidation of vulnerable residents in the Mohill area.
Cllr Des Guckian proposed a motion to end the “outrageous attacks on and intimidation of vulnerable residents in the Mohill area,” specifically Treanmore Estate.
“Antisocial behaviour has reached very serious proportions in the Treanmore Estate, where windows have been smashed in, tenants have been threatened and it has been going on for a long time and cannot be ignored any longer.
“Housing has placed younger and unstable tenants among a quiet, elderly and stable community. Despite many reports sent in by me and others, the attacks have intensified to a criminal degree,” Cllr Guckian said.
“Recently, an eighty year old lady was stalked by a man for two weeks who lived close by. The man put a hole in her front window with a drill and threw the drill through the window.”
Cllr Guckian told the M.D. that the woman remained in terror for days after.
Cllr Enda Stenson emphasised that this behaviour does not represent the residents of Treanmore estate.
“I certainly don’t want the whole Treanmore area to be branded as an area that's out of control. Some of the finest people in this county are in Treanmore and great workers for the Mohill area are living there,” Cllr Stenson said.
“The Housing department was on the scene within fifteen minutes along with Gardaí. The Gardaí are well aware of what’s happening as in the Housing department.
“We need vetting in that area. There are a lot of very good people in Treanmore and I do not want it to be branded as a no go area,” he added.
“Everyone deserves to feel safe in their home,” Cllr Reynolds said.
“Treanmore estate is primarily for housing the elderly and this should remain the case. While it’s only a small minority causing the issues it only takes one to instil fear.”
A reply from the Director of Services, Housing and Community, Corporate Services, Cultural and Emergency Services stated that The Housing Department responded to and provided support to a number of tenants that were impacted by anti-social behaviour.
The reply further stated that Leitrim County Council has a zero-tolerance policy towards anti-social behaviour and will use its powers under the Housing Acts to investigate, meet with tenants and issue tenancy warnings to enforce change.
The Council are working with the Gardaí to prevent further incidents and they will continue to monitor the situation.
“We have to follow the process. The executive is fully aware of that individual and the trouble that was happening.
“We are 100% committed to dealing with issues. The quick fix doesn’t happen as quickly as everybody would like. We have to follow proper procedure and we will do that, and it will get dealt with.”
