It was a momentous day for Sligo Rovers at the weekend when the club’s Walking Football team competed for the first time at the inaugural League Of Ireland Walking Football Festival.
The team was recently formed following a coaching programme delivered by Age and Opportunity. It is now coached by Hugh Cunningham and Rovers Football and Social Responsibility (FSR) officer Jamie Murphy, and includes several players from Leitrim.
The Walking Football Festival saw nine League of Ireland teams compete in a series of games ten minutes in length at the National Indoor Arena at Abbotstown in Dublin.
Rovers played the likes of Shelbourne, Bray Wanderers, Bohemian FC amongst others.
The Rovers team were competitive in all games with Shelbourne crowned winners on the day.
“It was an absolutely fantastic occasion for everyone involved,” said Jamie Murphy.
“Walking Football is a sport that is growing in popularity and it’s a fun way of promoting positive physical and mental health amongst male and female players aged 50 and over. ,
“The Rovers team has proven to be really popular and it’s an opportunity to play for and represent the club which is an absolute privilege.
“We would encourage anyone interested in playing to get in touch,” he added.
