Michael Feeney has been confirmed as the 2025 Leitrim Person of the Year.
The Secretary of the Leitrim Guardian announced this week that the Guardian Committee has selected Michael Feeney from the public nominations received as the 2025 Person of the Year.
Michael hails from Killargue and has a long history of service to Leitrim. In 1975, while working as a careers officer in London, he wrote a weekly column for the Leitrim Observer on the lives of people living in London. He was also a member of the Leitrim People’s Association during his time there.
Upon returning to Ireland, Michael joined the National Manpower Service in Drogheda and later the IDA in Dundalk and Galway. In 1981, he became the IDA regional manager for Donegal and was transferred to IDA HQ Dublin in 1986.
Michael has been actively involved in Leitrim GAA and has served as chairman of the Leitrim GAA Supporters Club since taking over the position 25 years ago. The Supporters Club has raised an average of €100,000 per year since 1986.
In addition, Michael was a founding member of the Leitrim Golf Classic in 1991, which ran annually for ten years and raised significant funds for Leitrim GAA. He also played a key role in the 50 Mile Challenge on Facebook, which has raised almost €600,000 since 2021.
Outside of football, Michael has served as Chairperson of the Leitrim Recreational Forum since 2019 and is a member of the Leitrim Co Council Diaspora Committee. He has also worked with Leitrim Co Council to promote economic activity in the county through business promotion events in Dublin, New York, and London.
Michael is also a Board member of Futurecast, Manorhamilton, and a member of the Advisory Board for Carrick Campus. All of his involvement with these organizations is on a voluntary basis.
