A Leitrim-based campaigner has been shortlisted for the prestigious 2024 Ocean Hero Awards, which celebrate the remarkable efforts of individuals and groups working to protect Ireland's coastline and marine life. Martina Healy, known locally as Leitrim Litter Picker, has been nominated in the Campaigner of the Year category for her tireless commitment to environmental stewardship.

In 2023, Martina committed to post daily about her litter picks and has continued this throughout 2024 reaching out to others to show the positive impact she makes with her daily litter picks. “I am delighted that I continued to post on Instagram each day and this has increased my ability to reach out to other litter pickers, from all over the world. Act local, think Global!” said Martina.

Since its inception in 2006, the Ocean Hero Awards, organised by An Taisce’s Clean Coasts Programme, have recognized outstanding contributions to coastal and marine conservation across the country. This year, the programme received hundreds of nominations across six categories, with 36 individuals and groups making the final shortlist.

Martina Healy’s work as a local environmental advocate has earned her widespread recognition. As Leitrim Litter Picker, she has led numerous clean-up campaigns and encouraged others in the community to join her in reducing waste and protecting the natural environment. Her passion for maintaining the cleanliness of Leitrim's streets and green spaces has made her a well-known figure in the fight against littering and pollution,” said Bronagh Moore, Clean Coasts Programme Manager.

The Ocean Hero Awards ceremony will take place on November 27th at the Gibson Hotel in Dublin. The event will highlight the work of volunteers and community groups who play a vital role in safeguarding Ireland’s coastlines. Alongside the awards presentation, there will be talks focused on marine conservation and the ongoing efforts to tackle environmental challenges facing Ireland’s marine life.
