MEP Ciaran Mullooly in Brussels
Independent Ireland MEP Ciaran Mullooly has urged the Irish Government to act with greater urgency in securing emergency assistance from European partners following Storm Éowyn. Offers of aid from Germany and Denmark have reportedly been on the table since before the storm struck, yet the Government only issued its initial request for help on Saturday afternoon.
According to Mullooly, the European Commissioner for Crisis Management confirmed that Ireland was offered assistance last Wednesday—one day before Storm Éowyn made landfall—but did not formally request aid until 4pm on Saturday. He describes this delay as “inexplicable,” pointing to the severe strain on Irish Water infrastructure across the country.
“Irish Water needs hundreds of generators to keep reservoirs open while waiting for ESB to restore power. We desperately need those generators to maintain water and proper safety standards for half a million homes,” Mullooly said. He added that Germany and Denmark are prepared to provide large mobile generators but are awaiting precise specifications on voltage requirements and the number of units needed.
Mullooly, who has been in direct contact with the European Commissioner for Crisis Management and Commissioner Fitto (responsible for Cohesion Funds), stressed that these funds could play a key role in supporting Ireland’s long-term rebuilding efforts. He praised the European Commission for its swift offer of satellite mapping and emergency support, but believes more help is needed.
“Given the scale of the challenges Ireland faces, it is imperative that the Government requests further assistance in a timely manner,” he stated, emphasizing the need to deploy all necessary resources without delay. “The EU stands ready to provide support, and we must not hesitate to ask for it,” Mullooly added.
Storm Éowyn caused extensive damage across Ireland, leaving hundreds of thousands without power and water. Emergency services have been stretched to capacity, and officials say much more will be required to restore critical infrastructure and ensure public safety in affected regions.
