Speakers at the 2025 Leitrim's Health Is Wealth.
On March 11th, renowned RTÉ journalist and acclaimed author Carole Coleman officially launched Leitrim’s Health is Wealth at a special event held at The Landmark Hotel in Carrick-on-Shannon. During the launch, Coleman spoke passionately about the significance of mental health awareness and the importance of events like Health is Wealth, which she has supported for many years.
Coleman highlighted the progress made in mental health awareness, acknowledging that while stigma still exists, more individuals from diverse backgrounds are now speaking openly about their struggles. She emphasized that this openness is crucial in breaking down barriers and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health.
Reflecting on her recent research for RTÉ, Coleman shared eye-opening insights into the evolution of mental health services in Ireland. She revealed a striking fact: Saint Columba’s, previously known as Saint Columba’s Lunatic Asylum, now stands as a symbol of an outdated past. She also pointed out the alarming shortage of mental health resources in the region, citing that there are only 25 acute beds per 100,000 people, far below the European recommendation of 75 beds per 100,000. Advocating for improvements, she stressed the need for “step-down” services to provide individuals with extended recovery time following a mental health crisis.
The event also featured Leitrim Guardian Person of the Year Michael Feeney, who spoke about his own experiences with mental health and how writing helped him overcome loneliness while living in London. Feeney shared how expressing himself through writing became a powerful tool in managing his emotions and connecting with others.
Also speaking at the event was celebrated Leitrim ladies’ footballer Charlene Tyrrell, who expressed her honour in being able to advocate for mental health awareness among young people today. She reflected on her own struggles and noted that the mental health services now available to young people were not accessible to her during her own journey. Tyrrell, now a mental health facilitator with the Gaelic Players Association, works with young athletes, equipping them with resilience and coping skills she wished she had during her own challenges.

The event also generated excitement for Bressie’s Where is My Mind? live show, which is set to take place in Carrick-on-Shannon on May 3rd. Having recently attended the show in Galway, Coleman assured attendees that they are in for a remarkable experience.
Other distinguished speakers included Dr. Catherine Dolan, who will join Charlie McGettigan and Bressie at the upcoming Where is My Mind? event. The initiative is backed by Leitrim County Council and Healthy Ireland, with Olwyn O’Toole addressing attendees on their behalf.
With tickets for the highly anticipated event selling fast, Valerie Cogan and Hubert McHugh encouraged early reservations. The event is free, and tickets can be booked at www.leitrim.ie.
