Sadness in Donegal and Leitrim at death of sculptor Brendan McGloin

There is huge sadness in Donegal and Leitrim following the death of internationally renowned stone mason Brendan McGloin.

Leading the tributes, the team at Local Hands craft collective in Ballyshannon said: “Today in Local Hands, we are very sad to hear of the passing of our good friend and crafty colleague, Brendan (Benny) McGloin.

“An extremely talented stone sculptor and artist, Brendan was involved with the Local Hands for a number of years.

“His work graces the landscape of the Northwest, internationally and in many homes and will ensure his presence will live long.

“Slán Benny.”

Brendan’s work on public display includes the memorial bench at Rossnowlagh Surf Club, and a number of fantastic pieces in Bundoran - Carriage na nÉan (Rock of the Birds), a beautiful stone sculpture on the Bundoran promenade; An Triur Ceann (The Triskle Heads) at Bundoran Civic Offices, and Olchloch Punta (The Limestone Punt) at the town’s West End.

Brendan also sculpted the memorial at Mullaghmore.

Other work ranged from bespoke gravestones to stunning, intricate Celtic crosses.

Brendan also gave workshops in the art of stone carving.

The Kinlough native will be greatly missed by his beloved family, friends and the close-knit stone mason community in the north-west and across Ireland.
