Sligo-Leitrim TD Frank Feighan has said he will put a parliamentary question to the Minister for Special Needs Education regarding the possibility of establishing a special education school in Leitrim.
His comments came after Fianna Fáil Senator Joe Flaherty claimed in the Seanad last week that the lack of such a school is placing significant pressure on special education services in surrounding counties.
“This is putting additional and major pressure on Longford, Sligo, and the adjoining counties because people from Leitrim have no option but to try to access services in those counties," said Senator Flaherty. He was adamant that providing this service in Leitrim would “ease the bottlenecks.”
The national shortage of spaces for children with special educational needs has become a contentious issue in recent months. Groups of parents struggling to secure placements for their children have even resorted to sleeping outside Leinster House in protest.
The Government has said it is committed to providing around 400 new special classes and 300 additional special school places—amounting to approximately 2,700 placements in the coming year. Of these, 369 have already been sanctioned.
In February, it was announced that six new special education classes would be established across Leitrim and Sligo for the 2025/2026 academic year. However, only one of these was designated for Leitrim.
Leitrim currently has 32 special education classes across 14 primary and secondary schools. Deputy Frank Feighan has stated that he would support the creation of a dedicated special school in the county.
“I intend to submit a parliamentary question initially to see what plans the Minister has within his department for such a school, and whether there is any existing school or campus in County Leitrim that may be suitable—or if a standalone school would be required,” he said.
“I will access the information and clarification from there in order to lobby within Government to ensure this much-needed school is provided,” he added.
