‘Lack of confidence in Gardaí’: Farrell family seek new investigation team, says MEP Mullooly

Midlands-North-West MEP and former journalist Ciarán Mullooly has revealed that the family of the late Liam Farrell no longer have confidence in the Gardaí investigation into the Leitrim farmer’s 2020 death—and are now calling for an entirely new inquiry led by a separate team.

Farrell, 87, was found dead behind his home near Rooskey in January 2020. While a post-mortem concluded that he died from severe coronary artery disease, the family has raised persistent concerns over the condition in which his body was discovered and the Garda response at the time.

Speaking this week, Mullooly confirmed the family had contacted him following a recent exchange with Gardaí.
“The family of the late Liam Farrell have been in touch with me with regard to a future investigation into the circumstances into his death,” he said.
“It is fair to say that after some of the answers and questions they were provided from the Gardaí last weekend, the Farrell family now have a lack of confidence in the Garda inquiry continuing at this stage.”

The MEP said the family has now asked him to bring the matter to the Minister for Justice.
“They have now asked me to contact the Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan, to ask that a new investigation be instigated with a separate and new investigation team,” Mullooly added.

The request marks a significant escalation in the family’s campaign for justice and a full, independent review of how the case was handled.
