Man up in Leitrim court after night-time rampage damaging his ex’s mother’s house

Carrick-on-Shannon District Court heard the damage was caused at the home of the mother of the man’s ex-partner

A man smashed the window at the home of the mother of his ex-partner’s in a late night- incident, the recent sitting of Carrick-on-Shannon District Court heard. Killian Mc Loughlin (31), of 3 St. Joseph’s Terrace, Sligo, received a three-month sentence,
suspended for 12 months, for damage at his ex-partner’s mother’s home in the early hours of 2 May 2021.

The court heard that Mc Loughlin was convicted of criminal damage after an incident between 3am and 9am at his ex-partner’s mother’s house in the Annaduff area, during which a front window pane was smashed, an internal door and plasterboard were damaged, a door handle was driven into a wall, and there was further damage to the inside of the front door.

Mc Loughlin has 19 previous convictions. For the defence, solicitor Ciarán White said Mc Loughlin has since secured employment as a barber, is addressing personal issues, and had an MRI appointment that day. Compensation has been paid to the victim. Judge Éiteáin Cunningham said it “must have been an extremely frightening experience for the victim,” particularly given the family connection and the extent of the damage, and she questioned how such significant harm could be consistent with simply “falling against a door.”

Taking into account the payment of compensation and Mc Loughlin’s current employment, she convicted and imposed three months’ imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, on condition he enter a Section 99 bond (own bond €200, nil cash).
Mc Loughlin was required to sign the bond before leaving court. Judge Cunningham warned that because the sentence is suspended, she did not want to see him back before the court within the next 12 months.
